By The 1000 Doctor editorial team · Published 24 Oct 2026

A stroke is an emergency that happens when the blood supply to part of the brain is cut off. The sooner treatment starts, the better the chance of recovery.

The FAST test

  • F – Face: one side may droop, and smiling may be hard.
  • A – Arms: the person may not be able to lift both arms and keep them there.
  • S – Speech: words may be slurred or confused.
  • T – Time: call 997 immediately.

Other possible signs

  • Weakness or numbness down one side of the body.
  • Blurred vision or sight loss in one or both eyes.
  • Difficulty speaking or finding words.
  • Confusion and memory loss.
  • Dizziness or falling over.
  • A sudden, severe headache.
  • Feeling or being sick.

What to do

  • Call 997 straight away, even if the symptoms stop after a short time.
  • Do not drive yourself to the emergency department; follow the call handler’s advice.
  • Note when the symptoms started if you can — it matters for treatment decisions.
